The City of Georgetown is now accepting applications for the position of Water Distribution Mechanic II. This position locates, troubleshoots and repairs water mains and service lines; installs, replaces, maintains and/or repairs water meters and fire hydrants; assists in planning and installing all infrastructures for new developments; collects distribution samples for testing.; operates system relief valves, air valves, isolation valves, fire hydrants and back flows; operates a variety of light and heavy automotive, construction or specialized equipment as required; performs other skilled and semi-skilled work as required. Reports to the Water Distribution Supervisor.

• Responds promptly to calls for water distribution system repair service.
• Constructs, installs and maintains water service lines and mains; completes water taps and service connections and associates appurtenances.
• Locates, troubleshoots and repairs broken water mains and service lines.
• Installs, replaces, maintains and/or repairs water meters and fire hydrants; flushes hydrants and tests hydrant flow pressure. Assists with the planning and installation of all infrastructures for all new developments within the City.
• Collects distribution system samples for testing as required or requested.
• Operates distribution system appurtenances as requires or requested including air relief valves, isolation valves, fire hydrants, etc.
• Operates a variety of light and heavy automotive, construction or specialized equipment as required to complete assigned tasks; equipment may include a backhoe, tractor, dump truck, line truck, tapping machine, boring equipment, packer, air hammer, etc.
• Inspects equipment for proper and safe working condition; cleans and maintains assigned vehicles and equipment.
• Hauls equipment and materials to and from work site.
• Performs clean up and minor landscaping work on properties after work is completed; repairs street cuts.
• Assists other department crew members with duties as necessary.
• Performs all duties in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, laws, regulations, contracts, permits and standards of quality and safety.
• Maintains accurate and complete work records.
• Receives and responds to inquiries, concerns, complaints and requests for assistance from customers and the general public regarding areas of responsibility.
• Attends meetings, training, etc. as appropriate to enhance job knowledge and skills to include annual water, asbestos and First Aid/CPR training.
• Works on call 24 hours a day to help ensure uninterrupted water service for City customers.
• Performs back flow testing for City back flow devices.
• Exercises water main valves.
• Receives and/or reviews various records and reports including work orders, tap orders, back flow order forms, installation, water leaks, quality of service, pressure related complaints and billing.
• Prepares and/or generates a variety of documents including work orders.
• Refers to work orders, maps, valve books, equipment manuals and locate requests
• Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as contractors, business owners, other utilities, plumbing companies, the public and coworkers.
• Operates a variety of machinery and equipment such as backhoes, compressors, tap machines, saws, dump trucks, arrow board, etc.
• Utilizes a variety of tools and/or sets of tools to include various wrenches, shovels, mechanical tools and plumbing tools.


Performs clean up duties in and around water utilities buildings.

Performs minor weed eating around fire hydrants.

Assists sewer crew.

Assists maintenance crews.

Assists wastewater plant crews.

Assists water plant crews.

Performs yard maintenance.

Performs building maintenance.

Performs other related duties as required.

Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of heavy machines and equipment. Must be able to push, stoop, lift, pull, reach, kneel , climb, crawl, crouch, carry or otherwise move objects. Work involves walking or standing for periods of time. Must be able to lift/carry weights of up to 80 pounds.

Minimum Qualifications: Requires a High School Diploma supplemented by a minimum of one to two years of experience in a job related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess or be able to obtain within six-months of hiring a Class "B" CDL license, Class "C" Water Distribution Operator Licenses and Backflow Prevention Certification.
