The City of Georgetown is now accepting applications for a Water Treatment Plant Operator I or II for the Water Department. Under general supervision, performs basic technical work in the operation and maintenance of the City's water treatment plant and related equipment. Assists with the operation the City's water filtration plant, ensuring the efficient delivery of safe, potable water. Monitors water flow and flows to tanks and wells. Performs laboratory tests on water and prepares related records and logs. Under direct supervision, adjust chemical feed levels, pumps, valves, filters, etc. to maintain proper operations. Performs various other operations including filling hoppers with chemicals, backwashing filters, changing pumps, exercising valves, cleaning and repairing basins, etc. Inspects equipment, facilities and grounds for maintenance and safety needs; reports any issues that require corrective actions as necessary; exercises emergency generators and motors on a regular basis. Maintains and repairs well system equipment; maintains well system water flow and chlorine dosage. Collects and performs basic laboratory tests on water samples. Maintains accurate technical records, charts and logs as required. Reports to the Water Treatment Plant Supervisor.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Assist with the operation of the Water Treatment Plant, to ensure the continuing production of safe drinking water.

Monitors water flow and flows to tanks and wells.

Assists with daily laboratory analysis on raw and treated water and prepares related records and logs.

Under direct supervision, adjusts chemical feed levels, pumps, valves, filters, etc. to maintain proper operations.

Assists with the performance of various other operations including filling hoppers with chemicals, backwashing filters, changing pumps, exercising valves, cleaning and repairing basins, etc.

Inspects equipment, facilities and grounds for maintenance and safety needs; reports any issues requiring corrective actions as necessary; exercises emergency generators and motors on a regular basis.

Maintains and repairs well system equipment; maintains well system water flow and disinfection dosage.

Assists with the collection and analysis of drinking water samples from the distribution system.

Maintains accurate technical records, charts and logs as required.

Completes a daily preventative maintenance from checklist.

Performs well operations/raw water station checks.

Fills out logs, records test results, etc.

Performs general maintenance.

Performs general cleaning tasks.

Assists with the preparation a variety of documents including laboratory analysis, and maintenance reports.

Refers to safety manuals, SOP's for lab and plant, MSDS sheets, PSM plan and EMP.

Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the supervisor, customers, plant operators and the maintenance department.

Operates a variety of machinery and/or equipment such as raw water pumps, finished water pumps, backwash pumps, chemical feed pumps and lab instruments and pickup trucks.

Utilizes a variety of tools and/or sets of tools to include various hand tools and specialized chlorine tools.

May be called to work outside of normal working hours to ensure uninterrupted water service for customers.

 

ESSENTIAL SAFETY FUNCTIONS

 It is the responsibility of each employee to comply with established policies, procedures and safe work practices. Each employee must follow safety training and instructions provided by their supervisor. Each employee must also properly wear and maintain all personal protective equipment required for their job. Finally, each employee must immediately report any unsafe work practices or unsafe conditions as well as any on-the-job injury or illnesses.

 

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Performs other related duties as required.

 

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

WTPO I :Requires a High School Diploma with a concentration in Math or Science, supplemented by a minimum of one year of experience in the water treatment/distribution field, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES

Must have the following

 South Carolina Drivers License

 Must have the following or be able to obtain within six-months of hiring:

 Class "E" Water Treatment Operator Licenses

 Must have the following or be able to obtain within twelve-months of hiring:

 Class "D" Water Treatment Operator Licenses

 Additional are desirable but not required:

  • Water Distribution Operator Licenses
  • CDL License

WTPO II

Requires an Associate's Degree in Math or Science, supplemented by a minimum of three years of experience as a Water Treatment Plant Operator, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

 Must have the following

  • South Carolina Drivers License

Must have the following :

  • Class "B" Water Treatment Operator License

 Additional are desirable but not required:

  • Water Distribution Operator Licenses
  • CDL License

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED

TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

 

Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines and equipment. Must be able to lift or otherwise move objects. Work involves walking or standing for periods of time. Must be able to bend, kneel, crouch, climb and reach. Must be able to lift/carry weights of up to 60 - 80 pounds.
