POLICE OFFICER Opening

The City of Georgetown is accepting applications for future eligibility lists. Filled position will be determined based on qualifications.

Police Officer I Entry Level

 

Qualifications: HS Diploma or GED; must possess appropriate valid SC driver's license; must meet and maintain minimum training and experience requirements for position as established by the department and the State of SC.

Salary Range: $31,403.70 - $43,965.38

 

Police Officer II

Qualifications: SC Class 1 Certified Police officer or certified Police officer in another state and willing to obtain SC certification; HS Diploma or GED; a minimum of one year of experience as a law enforcement officer or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience; must possess appropriate valid SC driver's license; must meet and maintain minimum training and experience requirements for position as established by the department and the State of SC.

Salary Range: $33,038.93 - $46,254.09

 

Police Officer III

Qualifications: SC Class 1 Certified Police officer or certified Police officer in another state and willing to obtain SC certification; HS Diploma or GED; a minimum of three to four years of experience in the policing field; must possess appropriate valid SC driver's license: must meet and maintain minimum training and experience requirements for position as established by the department and the State of SC.

Salary Range: $34,673.15 - $48,542.81

 

 

Under general supervision, protects and serves the citizens of the City of Georgetown by enforcing State law and City ordinances. Responds to public service calls and assists the disabled and those who cannot help themselves. Provides security by patrolling and preventing crimes from occurring. Provides funeral escorts when needed. Prepares warrant preps and courtesy summonses. Testifies in Municipal and General Sessions Court as needed in order to follow through with the successful prosecutions of offenders. Reports to the Sergeant of Community Services.

 

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

 Enforces all federal and state laws and City ordinances relating to public safety and welfare; performs all duties in compliance with applicable policies, procedures, laws, regulations and standards of safety.

 Performs routine patrol duties, including but not limited to patrolling assigned areas of the City, monitoring property security, responding to emergency calls and/or public calls for assistance, apprehending and arresting suspects and violent persons, securing crime scenes, seizing property and/or criminal evidence, maintaining public orders, transporting prisoners and mental patients, etc.

 Performs traffic enforcement duties including issuing traffic tickets and warnings, detecting DUI suspects and assisting with accident reconstruction and investigations.

 Participates in traffic/law enforcement education efforts.

 Serves warrants, summonses, subpoenas, civil and other official papers.

 Assists with criminal investigations. Interviews witnesses, complainants and victims; interrogates suspects; gathers physical evidence and preserves it for court; provides case follow-up as needed.

 Provides testimony and presents evidence in court as necessary. Assists with prosecution of cases on a regular basis.

 Administers first aid and assists EMTs at emergency scenes as necessary.

 Participates in special operations as required.

 Performs routine service duties, including but not limited to providing escort services for the protection of persons and/or property, assisting stranded motorists, providing funeral escorts, directing traffic, providing security and crowd control at special events, etc.

 Prepares and submits detailed work records and reports.

 Provides leadership to subordinate officers as assigned and participates in officer training to include eligibility for duties as a certified Field Training Officer. Performs duties as a team supervisor during the absence of assigned supervisors as needed.

 Remains abreast of all federal and state laws and ordinances of the City of Georgetown.

 Maintains assigned equipment and vehicles.

 Receives and responds to citizen inquiries, complaints and requests for assistance.

 Assists other law enforcement agencies and jurisdictions as required.

 Participates in neighborhood and community relations programs; attends neighborhood meetings to enhance police/community relationships and to address safety and quality of life issues.

 Attends periodic training sessions and attends seminars and meetings to keep abreast of current law enforcement trends; maintains required physical fitness and required level of proficiency in the use of firearms.

 Remains on call 24 hours per day, seven days a week for emergency response.

 Performs general clerical work as required, including but not limited to preparing reports and records, entering and retrieving computer data, copying and filing documents, answering telephones, etc.

 Receives and/or reviews various records and reports including shift briefings, victim information, NCIC reports, DMV reports and court dockets.

 Prepares and/or generates a variety of documents to include incident reports, uniformed traffic tickets, warrant preps, warning tickets and TR-310.

 Refers to City policies, general orders, state laws, federal laws and City ordinances.

 Utilizes a variety of computer software to include Visions, RMS, Outlook, Word and Omni form.

 Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as departmental personnel, other law enforcement, public, Municipal Court employees, Solicitor's Office employees and prisoners.

 Operates a variety of machinery and/or equipment such as service vehicles, firearms, Tasers, radios and Tint meters.

 Utilizes a variety of tools and/or sets of tools to include radar, Taser, O.C. spray, handcuffs and H&K USP .40.

 

ESSENTIAL SAFETY FUNCTIONS

 

It is the responsibility of each employee to comply with established policies, procedures and safe work practices. Each employee must follow safety training and instructions provided by their supervisor. Each employee must also properly wear and maintain all personal protective equipment required for their job. Finally, each employee must immediately report any unsafe work practices or unsafe conditions as well as any on-the-job injury or illnesses.

 

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Works at Camp GPD Blue with youths.

 Works football games.

 Works special events.

 Mentors troubled youth in the community.

Performs other related duties as required.

Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines and equipment. Must be able to exert force frequently to push, stoop, lift, pull, reach, kneel, climb, crawl, crouch, carry or otherwise move objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for periods of time. Must be able to lift/carry weights of up to 40-50 pounds.
